Online pediatric consultation has increased its popularity since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Parents prefer to have their children's medical consultation to be done at home rather than at the hospital or clinic where exposure to viruses is higher.

Since online pediatric teleconsultation is the new normal, we are sharing 5 tips on how to have an effective and efficient consultation with your Pediatrician online.

Let's start...

1. TIMING

Timing is essential to an effective pediatric telemedicine consultation.

If possible, schedule your online pediatric consultation when your child is awake, in a good mood, comfortable, relaxed, and most attentive. 👶

It would be a challenge for the doctor to assess a sleeping baby right? A good time would probably be after a well-rested sleep or after a nice nap.

This is, of course, dependent on the child’s age, routine, and habits.

While older kids can already talk and explain to their pediatrician doctor, younger babies will have to rely on their parent's observation and communication skills for an effective online consultation.

2. PREPARATION

Preparation is paramount for a pediatric teleconsultation.

Speaking of observation and communication, parents must take down notes on their child’s symptoms, changes in behavior, and other relevant information that would help the pediatrician.

Remember that in telemedicine, the doctor cannot physically assess the child. The doctor will rely on your observations and explanation as a parent or guardian.

Be ready with your “Baby Book” as the pediatrician may be asking for the baby’s weight, height, medicines, vaccines, and other related information.

When necessary, take pictures or a video of your baby in advance to show to the doctor if needed. Clear pictures can be helpful for cases such as rashes, wounds, and skin infections.

3. DISTRACTIONS

Avoid distractions during your online pediatric consultation.

This goes without saying but is often overlooked.

While some mobile devices already have noise-canceling technology, it would still be a good idea to turn off the radio, music player, and television.

We all love pets but a barking dog during an online consultation is not helpful. If possible, temporarily place pets in a different room or area in the house.

Put away distracting objects such as gadgets or toys with loud sound and flashing lights. A small stuffed toy should be fine.

Everyone loves social media and online shopping. But continuous notifications from Viber, Messenger, and Shopee might affect the online consultation process. Disabling the notification is optional but can be helpful.

4. GOOD LIGHTING

An area that is not too bright and not too dark is ideal for online medical consultations.

Before the online consultation, look for a good light source in your room or house.

Check your area in advance if natural light is better than artificial lighting.

Should you use window light, ceiling light, or a desk lamp? Or maybe a combination of each is better?

For most mobile devices, the rear camera is usually more advanced than the front camera.

Experiment with your device to get a good angle and illumination.

5. POWER AND INTERNET CONNECTION

A strong internet connection and a stable power source is a must for your pediatric e-consultation.

Charge your mobile devices and have your power bank ready.

This should ensure an uninterrupted supply of power during the online telemedicine consultation.

What about the internet connection?

Look for the best signal inside the house. And if applicable, ensure that sufficient Data or Load is available before starting the teleconsultation.

If possible, have a back-up internet supply just in case. It will be nice to have a Smart Sim Card ready when Globe is not available, or vice-versa.

This is optional but for a shared internet at home, it may be a good idea to temporarily stop online gaming and streaming services such as Mobile Legends, Netflix, and YouTube while the teleconsultation is ongoing.

If you have already tried Video Calls using Viber or Messenger at home with no issues, then online pediatric Teleconsultation should also work just fine.
